P1, The Hunger Games Ch. 21-24 HW and Test on Tuesday, 11/13

Wonderful discussions about the Gamemakers and why they might have changed the rules for Peeta and Katniss!  We're beginning to really see how manipulative the Capitol is.
Since our next reading day is on Friday, 11/9 (a 1/2 day), I've moved the HW and test day to the following Tuesday (11/13).

Visit NetClassroom for the PDF of the new Hunger Games Ch. 21-24 HW.

Be sure to follow the directions as stated on previous posts and click on the links to see lists/charts of themes.

C2, Vocab HW and Test on Tuesday, 11/13

Fabulous job everyone on completing your first review test!  I am impressed by how many people chose to complete extra credit and discussed the vocabulary analogies.

Vocab Lists This Week (Check your email for the actual PDFs of the vocab lesson)

C10

D10

E10

To prepare for the next test, I recommend going to the site and reviewing the previous units so that you are prepared for the review questions on the test (worth 10% of your test grade).

Vocab list C10 should review C7, C8, & C9- http://www.vocabtest.com/vocabulary_workshop/level_c.php.

Vocab list D10 should review D7, D8, & D9- http://www.vocabtest.com/vocabulary_workshop/level_d.php.

Vocab list E10 should review E7, E8, & E9- http://www.vocabtest.com/vocabulary_workshop/level_e.php.

Homework

You are expected to...

-complete all the worksheets in the vocab packet (hint: use the notes we took during class to help you on the "completing the sentence" section.)

-create flashcards for the words using the specified set-up displayed on the back of the cover sheet.  You do not have to handwrite them.  They can be created digitally or with additional copies of the worksheet definitions, sentences, synonyms, & antonyms.  They DO need to have all the required information.

-study for the test on your own using your flashcards, playing vocabulary taboo, or visit www.vocabtest.com or www.vocabularyworkshop.com (see my vocabulary page for more information on how to access the games -http://msamandadesilva.blogspot.com/p/vocabulary.html).

As extra credit, you may...

-choose one of the options on the back of the cover sheet.  One satisfactorily-completed extra-credit option will earn you an extra 10% on that homework assignment, and it only has to use 10 words!  This is an opportunity to let your creativity shine while you use the words.

Test

The vocab tests will have a spelling section and a multiple-choice section.

The spelling will consist of 20 words and each word will be worth 1 point each.

All Future Vocab Tests Except Review Tests
After this first week of vocabulary, the vocab tests will have a review section.  So there will be 35 questions on the unit assigned for that week.
      -about 5 definitions
      -about 7 synonyms
      -about 8 antonyms
      -about 15 sentences

There will also be 10 review questions from all the words from the previous lessons covered that school year each worth 1 point.
      -about 5 definitions
      -about 5 sentences

So it is extremely important to keep your flashcards and review previous lessons often or play the online games for the previous lessons frequently to keep those words fresh in your memory.

Parents, please help encourage your child to use these words in conversations they have with you, look for examples of these words in the books, radio, TV, movies, etc you come into contact with.  This will not only positively reinforce the definition and examples of the word, but it also will show how they are actually used in the real world! :)

Please ask if you have any questions!

C2, Tangerine Final Book Project Due on Thursday, 11/8

Your final book project is meant to be a fun, creative way to demonstrate your understanding of the book.  I encourage you to be pick an activity that you are excited to complete.

Please review the information posted on the assignment in NetClassroom.  Make sure you follow all the directions and ask if there is any confusion.   Remember that you need to reference at least 7 events from the book in whichever project you choose.  You also should include a writing element where you explain or justify your design.

I recommend that you begin it early so that way any questions can be asked ahead of time.

Be prepared to give short oral presentation on your project.  Keep it under 5 minutes.  Have fun!

P2, Vocab HW and Test on Wednesday, 11/7

This week, we have review units.  This means that your worksheets review the previous three units.  You do not have to write flashcards, but you DO need to bring all the flashcards to class on that Wednesday.

I strongly recommend visiting the online website, www.vocabtest.com, to play the antonym and synonym games.  Many students had questions on the test about the synonyms and antonyms and I think that the online games will help expose students to them more.

We have reviewed strategies for figuring out analogies.  Each student should have them written out in their composition book.  Please make sure you refer to them if you get stuck.  Ask early and often if you have any questions.

An extra credit option was also offered for Book C and Book D.  It involves some grammar and root word concepts.  If it is completed fairly accurately, I will add 10% to any vocabulary homework grade.  This is being offered in addition to any of the options on the back of the cover sheet.  You are welcome and encouraged to do as many as you would like. :)

Some of you have expressed interest in testing out of Book C and Book D.  If you are interested, I need you to be ready to take the final Book C or Book D test that Tuesday.  You still do need to complete the homework.  You just will take a different test.

You can review for the test by looking at the vocab words & definitions and by playing games on the websites listed below.

The vocab tests this week will have 50 multiple-choice questions on the three lessons we have covered so far.

There will be no spelling.

Parents, please help encourage your child to use these words in conversations they have with you, look for examples of these words in the books, radio, TV, movies, etc you come into contact with.  This will not only positively reinforce the definition and examples of the word, but it also will show how they are actually used in the real world! :)
